Yama - Process Engineer
About Yama
Yama is tackling the greatest challenge of our time: Climate Change. Our mission is to remove 1 billion tons of CO₂ by 2050 through the development of the most energy-efficient and scalable Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.
DAC is essential to limit global warming to 1.5°C, but current technologies are resource-intensive and unsustainable at scale. At Yama, we’ve developed a game-changing approach that integrates electrochemistry and low-grade heat regeneration, breaking thermodynamic and kinetic barriers to enable scalable and affordable CO₂ removal.
Founded in May 2023, Yama is a Delaware-incorporated spinout from Deep Science Ventures, supported by the Grantham Foundation and backed by top-tier US and EU investors. Based in Paris, our leadership team—CEO Aurélie Gonzalez, CTO Valentin Fougerit, and Head of Science Harry Macpherson—are driving this bold climate mission forward.
Join us to help build the scientific foundations of tomorrow’s climate solution.
The Role: Process Engineer
We are seeking an exceptional Process Engineer to support the design and optimization of our novel DAC technology.
The role is well-balanced between experimental (50%) and simulation (50%) duties.
You will lead the development of our process optimization methods based on process simulations. It implies building a process vision of our DAC technology to effectively optimize our aggressive targets for energy consumption (kWh/tCO₂) and capture cost ($/tCO₂).
This is a pivotal role in the organization, bridging between the R&D team and the engineering team.
Concretely, he/she will be in charge of:
Leading the development of our process optimization methods. It involves:
the definition of the process simulation strategy
the operational management of the process simulation strategy, combining your own contributions with internal and external resources (external consultant, process model software vendor…)
Developing the process flowsheet under gPROMS software
Validating the process model against experimental pilot data on a continuous basis and building the necessary framework to collaborate with the R&D team
Performing experimental work to produce experimental dataset to support the validation of process simulations
Optimizing the process KPIs by working on the process design
Upon model validation, producing engineering documentation for the commercial pilot plant FEED study
These developments will be performed in close collaboration with the R&D team and occasionaly with external experts.
He/She will report and work closely with the CTO, and be working in close relationship with our R&D Lead.
Key Challenges You’ll Tackle
Process Optimization: Lead the process optimization to improve our process KPIs by developing a comprehensive understanding of Yama groundbreaking DAC technology
Bridging the gap between R&D and engineering: Convert the findings from the R&D team into an operational asset for the company to support future engineering developments
Key Responsibilities
Validate a process model to provide a strong engineer asset: Starting from an existing process flowsheet, validate the process simulations against experimental datasets. This will provide a strong asset for driving R&D and future engineering needs.
Build a bridge between R&D and process optimization: Design the framework and drive to collaborate with the R&D team in order to improve our process KPIs thanks to process optimization methods.
Perform rigorous experimental work: Produce the required experimental datasets needed for process optimization in coordination with the R&D team.
Innovate in the process design: Develop new process optimization strategies based on your deep understanding of Yama’s technology.
Drive Collaboration & Transversality: Champion teamwork—within your team and across Yama. Proactively listen to colleagues, share knowledge, and work transversally with R&D, pilot and engineering teams to accelerate collective progress.
