Yama - Junior Electrochemist (WIP)

About Yama

Yama is tackling the greatest challenge of our time: Climate Change. Our mission is to remove 1 billion tons of CO2 by 2050 through the development of the most energy-efficient and scalable Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.
DAC is essential to limit global warming to 1.5°C, but current technologies are resource-intensive and unsustainable at scale. At Yama, we’ve innovated a game-changing approach that integrates two CO2 desorption technologies, breaking through thermodynamic and kinetic barriers to enable scalable and affordable CO2 removal.
Founded in May 2023, Yama is a Delaware-incorporated spinout from Deep Science Ventures, supported by the Grantham Foundation and backed by top-tier US and EU investors. Based in Paris, France, our leadership team—CEO Aurélie Gonzalez and CTO Valentin Fougerit—are driving this bold climate mission forward.
Join us to help build a tech-driven solution to save the planet.

The Role: Junior electrochemist

Yama is looking for an junior electrochemist in its R&D team to work on a key part of its technology: the electrochemical stack.
The role will be performing R&D tests on different electrochemical set-ups.
Concretely, he/she will be in charge of:
Contributing to the development of the experimental plan (influence of cell components, influence of process conditions).
Designing and assembling experimental set-ups.
Performing electrochemical measurements.
Performing advanced analytical measurements (Total Inorganic Carbon, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) depending on the results of the experimental work, he/she may contribute to the process modelling work with a Process Simulation engineer.
This development will be performed in partnership with external companies or R&D partners, such as but not limited to: electrochemical technology supplier, academic or private R&D group, membrane manufacturer, external experts…
He/She will report and work closely with the R&D Coordinator, and occasionally with the CTO.
This is a key role in Yama organisation as working on the heart of the Yama technology.

Key Responsibilities

Suggest experimental plan to optimize the electrochemical cell performance.
Design and assemble experimental set-ups.
Develop and write testing protocols.
Conduct R&D tests on the experimental set-up.
Present findings clearly and efficiently to the R&D team (through both written and oral communication).
Contribute to IP development (competitor benchmark and watch, IP production for Yama).
Work alongside with the different technical department (Scale-up team, chemist team, absorption team and mechanical team)

What you bring

Experiences:
Master level in Electrochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, physical chemistry
Competences in Electrochemistry or CO2 Capture or Utilization would be a plus, but not essential.
Skills:
Strong technical and project management abilities.
Fluent in English; French is an advantage.
Mindset:
Passion for climate innovation and impact.
Obsessed by execution & results-oriented, team working spirit, and autonomy.
Detail-oriented, proactive, and execution-focused.
Flexibility on the type of duties to be performed and capacity to work on different topics at the same time – Polyvalent/Multitask.

Why Join Yama?

Impactful Mission: Be part of a team revolutionizing carbon removal technology.
Ownership & Growth: Lead critical projects in a fast-growing startup.
Dynamic Team: Collaborate with visionary founders and top-tier partners.
Prime Location: Work in central Paris, with a competitive package including equity.
