Yama - Mechanical engineering intern

I. Company introduction:
Yama is solving the biggest threat humanity ever faced: Climate Change with the ambitious goal to remove a billion tons of CO2 by 2050.
Yama’s purpose is to scale up, industrialize, and launch on the market the lowest energy consumption scalable Direct Air Capture technology.
DAC is a necessary technology to keep the Earth’s temperature below 1.5°C, but today’s processes would consume unsustainable quantities of energy, land or water if deployed at the required scale. We are solving that.
The technology is based on a novel integration of two CO2 desorption technologies, which allows Yama to undercut the thermodynamic and kinetic limits of existing processes.
Yama is a spin-out from Deep Science Ventures and is funded by the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, which was incorporated in May 2023. Yama currently operates in Paris, France.
II. Job General scope:
The position consists of supporting the Engineering team, especially the Mechanical Engineer, in 2 main missions:
Design and industrialize the production of the main equipment in Yama’s DAC process
Support the Process Engineering leader in the FEED study for Yama’s first pilot plant (TRL 6)
This development will be performed under the guidance of the Mechanical Engineer in partnership with external companies, such as but not limited to: electrochemical cell manufacturers, equipment vendors, engineering contractor, …
The role belongs to the Engineering team and reports directly to the Mechanical Engineer.
III. Main achievements/Missions/Objectives:
The main responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineering Intern would be:
Participate in the supply of Yama’s main equipment
Contribute to the mechanical engineering design for the different pieces comprised in the electrochemical cell
Support the Mechanical Engineer to build the strategy for the supply of this main equipment - together with Process Engineer leader and CTO
Bring down the production cost of this equipment
Support the Process Engineering leader in the objective of commissioning Yama’s first pilot plant (TRL 6) with a capture capacity of 300 tCO2/y
Produce pilot plant lay-out and 3D design
Participate in the production of pilot plant engineering documentation
Write equipment specifications and lead equipment inquiries
Visit and supervise engineering integrator work and pilot plant assembly
Develop testing protocols, build experimental set-ups and perform them at Yama lab in Paris or at partner facilities
Conducting comprehensive experimental campaigns to test and validate hypotheses
Designing adequate experimental set-up and managing external supplies
Optimizing the operational conditions of the processes across all product scales
Exploring and integrating innovative experimental methodologies to drive advancements in the field
Presenting findings clearly and efficiently to the R&D team (through both written and oral communication).
IV- Position Benefits
Valuable hands-off experience, guidance, and mentorship with mechanical engineer.
Enjoy the innovative spirit within the dynamic international team based in the center of Paris.
It’s a 6-month intern position (min 5 months).
The position will offer the opportunity to make a practical contribution to mitigating the climate crisis.
V- Qualification requirements:
The qualifications needed are by order of importance:
Currently enrolled in a Masters level degree in Mechanical / Engineering
Competences in CO2 Capture or Utilization would be a plus, but not essential
Obsessed by execution & results-oriented, team working spirit, and autonomy.
Flexibility on the type of duties to be performed and capacity to work on different topics at the same time – Polyvalent/Multitask.
English proficiency (french not essential)
