Yama - Mechanical Engineer

About Yama

Yama (www.yamacarbon.com) is solving the biggest threat humanity ever faced: Climate Change with the ambitious goal to remove a billion tons of CO2 by 2050.
Yama’s purpose is to scale-up, industrialize and launch on the market the lowest energy consumption scalable Direct Air Capture technology.
DAC is a necessary technology to keep the Earth’s temperature below 1.5°C, but today’s processes would consume unsustainable quantities of energy, land or water if deployed at the required scale. We are solving that.
The technology is based on a novel integration of two CO2 desorption technologies, which allows Yama to undercut the thermodynamic and kinetic limits of existing processes.
Yama is a spin out from Deep Science Ventures, and is funded by the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, which was been incorporated in May 2023. Yama a Delaware company with the CTO (Valentin Fougerit) and CEO (Aurélie Gonzalez) based in Paris, France.
Yama fundraised several millions from top US and EU investors.

Your Mission

Yama is bringing Direct Air Capture (DAC) to scale—and we’re looking for our first key mechanical engineering collaborator to make it happen.
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing and industrializing Yama’s core DAC equipment, bridging the gap from lab-scale prototypes to our first pilot plant.
You will support the Engineering team in two key missions:
Developing and industrializing Yama’s core DAC equipment—from lab-scale to pilot deployment.
Supporting the Process Engineering lead in the FEED study for Yama’s first pilot plant (TRL 6).
This work will be done in close collaboration with external partners, including electrochemical cell manufacturers, equipment vendors, and engineering contractors.
The role is part of the Engineering team, reporting directly to the CTO.

Key Responsibilities

1. Secure the Supply of Yama’s Core Equipment
Lead mechanical design for key components of Yama’s electrochemical cell.
Develop a procurement and supply strategy for core equipment alongside the Process Engineering Lead and CTO.
Drive cost reduction strategies for equipment manufacturing.
2. Support the Process Engineering Lead in Deploying Yama’s First Pilot Plant (TRL 6, 300 tCO₂/year)
Develop pilot plant layout and 3D design.
Contribute to engineering documentation for the pilot plant.
Write equipment specifications and lead vendor inquiries.
Oversee engineering contractor work and pilot assembly on-site.
3. Occasionally Support R&D Experimental Setups
Design experimental setups and custom components.
Source specialized components as needed.

What You Bring

Background:
Master's degree from a top engineering schools or the top world universities
Background in chemistry/process or climate change topics would be a clear plus.
Skills:
Strong understanding of both technical and business operations.
Exceptional organizational and multitasking skills.
Clear, effective communication in English and French.
Mindset:
Passion for climate solutions and innovative technology.
