About uFraction8uFraction8 is developing next-generation microfluidic bioprocessing technology. We are looking for a practical, detail-oriented Mechatronics Engineer or Senior Mechatronics Engineer to help develop our scientific instrumentation from working prototypes into robust, reliable and beta-ready systems.
This is a hands-on engineering and product-development role.
It is not a routine maintenance position and is not primarily a leadership, people-management or team-supervision role. The successful candidate will personally design, build, programme, integrate, test, troubleshoot and improve complex electromechanical systems across mechanical, electrical, control, software and fluidic interfaces.
The Senior Mechatronics Engineer title reflects greater technical experience, independence and engineering judgement. It does not imply a line-management or departmental-leadership position.
You will:
- Design electromechanical assemblies, mechanisms, enclosures, fixtures and engineering test rigs.
- Integrate pumps, valves, pressure and flow sensors, actuators, motors, control electronics, microcontrollers and embedded or control software.
- Produce 3D CAD models, detailed manufacturing drawings, tolerance specifications, bills of materials and interface documentation.
- Personally build, test, debug and improve physical prototypes.
- Develop and execute verification tests covering flow performance, pressure stability, repeatability, reliability, safety, usability and serviceability.
- Conduct root-cause investigations and implement practical design improvements.
- Improve product robustness, manufacturability, maintainability and cost.
- Support beta-system builds, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and user-feedback activities.
- Work closely with colleagues in microfluidics, biology, bioprocessing, software, electronics and quality, as well as external suppliers.
- Maintain clear drawings, specifications, test plans, test reports and design-history documentation suitable for regulated product development.
Applicants should have either:
- At least five years of directly relevant industry experience in mechatronics, scientific instrumentation, automation, electromechanical product development or a closely related field; or
- Substantial and directly relevant postdoctoral training, supported by evidence of hands-on engineering delivery, system integration, prototype development, experimental testing and technical ownership.
Postdoctoral experience will be assessed according to its relevance, technical depth and demonstrated practical application.
Candidates with other academic, technical or professional qualification pathways will be considered on their individual merits where they can demonstrate the required competence and relevant practical experience.
You should be able to demonstrate:
- Instrumentation or systems you have built and what your role in this was
- Strong practical experience in electromechanical system design, integration and troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or an equivalent 3D CAD system, including assemblies, detailed drawings and bill-of-material generation.
- Experience integrating sensors, actuators, motors, pumps, pneumatics, instrumentation hardware and control systems.
- Experience with microcontroller-based control, including programming, peripheral interfacing and debugging.
- The ability to personally build, test, troubleshoot and improve physical hardware.
- An understanding of design for manufacture and assembly, tolerancing, material selection and supplier constraints.
- Strong technical documentation skills.
- The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a small multidisciplinary product-development team.
- Comfort working with evolving technical requirements and rapidly developing prototypes.
A degree, HNC/HND or equivalent experience in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Robotics, Automation, Control Systems or a related discipline would be appropriate. Equivalent industrial and professional experience will be considered on merit.
Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
- Scientific instrumentation or laboratory automation.
- Life-science, medical-device or bioprocessing equipment.
- Precision fluidic or microfluidic control systems.
- Python, C/C++, embedded systems, data acquisition, PLC/HMI systems or motion control.
- Pressure, flow, pump, valve or filtration systems.
- IEC 61010, CE/UKCA compliance, design controls, risk assessment or verification and validation.
- Progressing products from early prototypes through design freeze, beta testing, pilot production or manufacturing transfer.
- Working with machine shops, external suppliers, contract manufacturers or specialist component vendors.
This is a Poland-based work-from-home/hybrid position. Remote working will be suitable for activities such as mechanical design, programming, documentation, data analysis and supplier coordination.
Because this is a hands-on engineering role, the successful candidate must also be available to attend company, partner, supplier, laboratory or workshop locations when physical prototype assembly, integration, testing, commissioning or troubleshooting is required.
A company laptop will be provided.
Applicants must already have and maintain legal authorisation to live and work in Poland. uFraction8 is unable to provide visa or work-permit sponsorship for this position.
Applicants must also be willing and able to undertake international business travel when required. Candidates who can travel internationally with minimal visa restrictions will be preferred.
